HURTWOOD H MARK
TYPOGRAPHY // IDENTITY DESIGN // PRINT & PUBLISHING SYSTEMS
A typographic device for spine and surface.
This monogram was designed as a scalable identifier – a typographic emblem developed to function across book spines, seals, and packaging. Built for clarity at reduced sizes, the mark balances classical proportions with production logic, remaining legible and distinctive even when foiled or embossed at just 3mm wide. The form – a serifed ‘H’ held within an oval – nods to the visual language of bookplates, printed matter, and hallmarks, while operating cleanly within contemporary systems. The letterform itself was redrawn to be proprietary – a custom H with subtle detailing tailored for clarity, balance, and reproduction. The oval is drawn directly from the ‘o’ in the wordmark, creating a quiet typographic echo that ties the mark to its wider visual language. As a concept, it brings elegant, minimal forms into dialogue with the deeper histories of publishing and production — a symbol intended to embody both the craft and clarity of a company rooted in the material life of books.
Alternate versions were drawn for use above and below 8mm to ensure consistent results across materials and scales. It’s a mark designed to hold its shape, materially and metaphorically.
