JAMES ROSENQUIST: VISUALISING THE SIXTIES
EXHIBITION BOOK // THADDEUS ROPAC // EDITORIAL DESIGN
James Rosenquist: Visualising the Sixties is a publication designed to reflect the bold, experimental spirit of Rosenquist’s pivotal decade. Created to accompany the exhibition at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, the book reimagines Rosenquist’s approach to painting, using rhythm, scale, and structure to reflect his use of advertising, collage, and large-scale composition to challenge the boundaries between art, media, and politics.

The book's flow mirrors the fragmentation and tension of Rosenquist’s canvases. Large-scale images are paired with cropped details, creating dynamic shifts in scale and momentum. Throwouts extend the experience of his expansive works, while negative space holds each image in balance, reinforcing both scale and movement – allowing the book itself to feel like an active participant in the narrative. The typography provides a quiet, precise structure, supporting the artwork without stepping in front of it. Set in a modular, geometric typeface that recalls the commercial typographic language of the 1960s, it offers a clean, cohesive framework. The cover design features two perspectives of Untitled (Blue Sky), establishing an immediate connection to the exhibition's themes of fragmentation and collision. The restrained titling allows the artwork to dominate, positioning it as the central gesture.

Visualising the Sixties becomes a space where Rosenquist’s visual techniques – collage, scale, and tension – are not simply represented but woven into the fabric of the reader’s encounter, offering a fresh way to experience his work that mirrors its complexity and disruptiveness.
