RICHARD BEER: ART & LIFE
ARTIST'S MONOGRAPH & BIOGRAPHY // EDITORIAL DESIGN
Richard Beer: Art & Life brings together the work and archive of the British artist and designer, spanning painting, drawing, print and stage design. An assemblage of finished works, sketchbooks, photographs and ephemera, the book is designed to accommodate the different registers of this material, rather than resolve them into a single visual language.
The interior draws on the conventions of the artist monograph, using a restrained typographic language, generous margins and carefully paced image sequences. Rather than imposing a strong graphic device, the design relies on proportion, placement and shifts in density to give individual works space while establishing relationships across Beer’s wider practice.
The material treatment extends the book’s restrained, classical approach. Quarter-bound in deep red cloth, with gold foil-blocked typography and Beer’s work across the cover, the binding draws on the conventions of the artist monograph. Traditional in construction, its richness comes from the relationship between cloth, foil and image rather than from additional graphic intervention, a simple assemblage that reflects the balance between structure and character throughout the book.
