THROUGH THE EYES OF THE ARTIST CAMPAIGN

WINSOR & NEWTON // ART DIRECTION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY // GLOBAL CAMPAIGN

Light, texture, and the truth of the artist's studio.

As part of the wider Winsor & Newton brand refresh, I developed a new photographic direction that moved away from clinical product imagery and towards something more intimate, textured, and alive. The aim was to privilege process over polish – a deliberate shift toward authenticity, tactility, and the physical act of making.

I shaped an approach that centred on naturalism and tactility, capturing the honest textures of the studio: stained palettes, taped edges, pigment on skin. The lighting was soft and responsive, bringing clarity without harshness, and allowing the vibrancy of the materials to come through without distortion. The focus was on capturing the artist’s world in close detail – observed rather than arranged. Framing, light, and surface worked together to create images that feel lived-in and emotionally true. The result is a visual identity that resists polish in favour of presence.

This photography direction now underpins Winsor & Newton’s refreshed brand world. It is embedded in the brand guidelines and brand book, used across digital campaigns, social platforms, and in-store communications. It also featured prominently in the inaugural Winsor & Newton x Paul Smith International Art Prize – lending coherence, warmth and a distinctive visual intelligence to the brand’s outward expression.
