FONTANA: I TAGLI, EXHIBITION IDENTITY
EXHIBITION IDENTITY // NAHMAD PROJECTS
Extending the visual grammar of the tagli.
We developed an exhibition identity rooted in Fontana’s defining gesture: the cut. The slash appeared both as graphic motif and structural device – sometimes illustrative, but always intentional. The design translated the incision into a system of forms: precise, minimal, and spatially attuned.
A cropped detail from a tagli became the lead visual across materials – its deep red and slashed surface offered both tonal weight and conceptual foundation. Elsewhere, graphic adaptations of the cut were introduced with restraint, used across print and environmental graphics to build coherence without competing with the works themselves. Typography was set in a didone serif chosen for its contrast and historical resonance – a nod to the visual culture of postwar Italy. Type was sometimes overlaid, sometimes held apart, with each layout structured to preserve tension and rhythm – echoing the dynamics of Fontana’s compositions.
The identity was developed in close collaboration with Nahmad Projects, with attention given to how each element operated in relation to the work and the space. The result was visually spare, conceptually direct – a system responsive to Fontana’s formal language, without reducing it.
