ART DIRECTION // ALBUM ARTWORK & PACKAGING
Atmosphere, rendered in trace: a visual identity for ambient collapse.
A visual identity and set of artworks for Traces, the debut vinyl release by Telin – an ambient music project shaped by landscape, memory, and impermanence. The artwork developed in response to the album’s slow-building, expansive compositions – music that feels both grounded and unstable, like weather systems drifting across static terrain. The visual language centres on cyanotypes – a photographic technique defined by its sensitivity to light, time, and trace. Each image, composed from botanical forms, was chosen for its tension between presence and absence. They were digitally manipulated to introduce moments of visual interference, echoing the distortions of a failing VHS or corrupted signal. The resulting compositions feel held in suspension – recognisable yet fractured, their surface fidelity pushed to the edge of rupture.
Typography was used with restraint. A condensed italic, set in lowercase and placed obliquely, maintains the image-led nature of the object. The palette remained tightly constrained: luminous cyan and indigo, interrupted only by the distortions.
Alongside the core LP packaging, a series of single artworks extended the language – each track represented by a unique cyanotype adapted to reflect its tone and tempo. The final identity sits somewhere between field document and sound object – a study in atmosphere and decay.
