YULIA IOSILZON, RAFFLESIA
SAPLING GALLERY // ART DIRECTION // ARTIST'S EDITION PRINT
A collectible fragment of an amphibious myth.

A signed, limited-edition giclée print developed in close collaboration with artist Yulia Iosilzon for Sapling Gallery, presented in a custom foil-stamped folder. Created to accompany Iosilzon’s 2022 solo exhibition Frogspawn, this edition marked the artist’s first foray into print. The original painting was part of a body of work exploring metamorphosis, hybridity, and amphibious femininity, grounded in a fictional text by curator Sonja Teszler – a retelling of The Marsh King’s Daughter in which the female protagonist embraces, rather than escapes, her dual nature.

I worked closely with Yulia and Sapling Gallery to translate the painting into print while preserving its narrative density. Together, we embedded multiple fragments of hand-lettered text – drawn from Teszler’s writing – into the composition itself. Painted by Yulia and composed typographically by me, the text moves through the image in a rhythm that mirrors its internal structure. Rather than functioning as caption or commentary, these annotations were treated as an integral layer within the painting: spatially embedded, materially present, and narratively active.

I led on the design and production of the edition, selecting Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm for its tactility and tonal softness, and involved in all proofing and print specification. Each print was housed in a custom die-stamped folder, designed to echo the quiet formality of an archival enclosure while elevating the work as a discrete collectible. Every aspect of the edition – from typographic structure to material finish – was considered as a continuation of the artwork’s internal poetics.
