THE SEEDS INSIDE, THE GRAPES UPON THE VINE
BARA BARA BAND // ART DIRECTION // ALBUM ARTWORK & PACKAGING
A 17th-century still life, revoiced through colour, tension, and deliberate disruption.
This project began with a painting. A 17th-century Dutch still life – already meticulous, already full of symbols.
Jacob van Walscapelle’s Still Life with Fruit (1675) was used as a structure, a fixed composition with its own logic, into which a new meaning could be mapped. Elements were carefully recoloured – not as pastiche or provocation, but as a way to shape a new syntax. Colours were carefully rebuilt: each grape, each kernel, each surface adjusted to heighten the tension between realism and artificiality, surface and symbol. The original tones – earthy, subdued, devotional – give way to something glossier, sharper, stranger. The composition remains untouched, but the atmosphere shifts: precise, slightly unreal, faintly disquieting.
The title appears in a compact, scrawled script – deliberate, tense, and referential. It nods to manuscript lettering or devotional annotation, small in scale but visually insistent. Not an overlay, but an interruption.
The back cover uses a second detail from the painting – cooler, darker, and more pared back. The tracklist sits quietly within the frame, offering a tonal counterweight to the front and reinforcing the sense of an image re-seen rather than redesigned.
What looks like a single image is, in fact, a layered reworking – a still life held in tension between reverence and reanimation.
