BRIAN CLARKE

FINE ART CATALOGUE // THE SAINSBURY CENTRE // EDITORIAL DESIGN

A 300-page monograph exploring the architectural and emotional scope of stained glass through the work of Brian Clarke, developed in close collaboration with the artist’s studio and published by HENI to accompany his major retrospective at the Sainsbury Centre. Conceived as a spatial and chromatic experience, the publication functions as a visual analogue to Clarke’s practice – one that expands stained glass beyond its liturgical past into a contemporary language of light, structure, and intensity. Our role was to translate that vision into a printed space: one that could hold the optical and physical charge of the work while allowing for reflection and rhythm.

Layouts were approached as acts of choreography. Full-bleed imagery, dramatic shifts in scale, and asymmetrical pacing create a sense of movement and saturation, echoing the sensory impact of Clarke’s installations. These charged visual passages are offset by moments of calm – allowing the work to breathe while reinforcing its architectural presence. A restrained typographic palette anchors the text with clarity, resisting ornament in favour of structure and legibility. Editorial elements are held lightly within the grid, deferring to the imagery without losing intention. The aim was not to explain the work, but to create a setting in which it could be experienced – on the page, in time.

Digitally printed on Mohawk Superfine for its fidelity and surface tactility, the book is three-quarter bound in silver foil-blocked cloth. The result is a publication that resists conventional documentation. It invites the reader into a space of encounter – where glass becomes image, and image becomes atmosphere. A site of luminosity, rhythm, and material intelligence.
